Kindergarten – Ms. Elizabeth Jones

The full day kindergarten program at HCS is child-centered, taking each student where they are in their individual readiness and development, meeting their individual needs, and guiding them through important skills needed for school.

The Responsive Classroom philosophy provides the positive background for joyful and engaging learning, with the understanding of a limited attention span.  These activities included daily greeting activities, name games, group and partner sharing, fun social games, energizers to boost attention, and calming activities for transitions.

Much of our work is done in rotating centers with meaningful activities to build individualized and group motor skills, language skills, and math skills. We use the Wonders Reading Program and the Math In Focus program.

Science and social studies activities are done outside as much as possible and encourage and support a child’s natural curiosity and social being.

Playtime is provided, both inside and outside to build important social and developmental skills.

The primary goal of kindergarten is to provide a safe, rich, and meaningful experience for all children, to help them feel included and ready, both socially and academically for first grade.

First grade is a time for excitement, joy and a shared enthusiasm for learning!

As a member of the school community, your child has many opportunities to experience various social situations, independence, responsibility, and feel proud of accomplishments.

Language Arts: First grade is also a time that your child will begin to see himself/herself as a reader and writer! Each day your child will be immersed in reading and writing through Wonders, a reading program built on the College and Career Readiness Standards. The program supports building a strong reading foundation, allows access to complex text, and encourages collaborative work and writing through a readers/writing workshop.

Math: Math in Focus, our first grade math program focuses on the development of skills through hands-on instruction and practice. The concepts include: basic facts, place value, mental math, geometry, measurement, data analysis and problem solving.

Science: The topics include: Seeing and Hearing, Animals and Plants and Up in The Sky.

Social Studies: These topics are framed around family, school and community with an emphasis on respect, trust, caring, family and responsibility. Other topics include famous people, holidays and traditions.

Our reading program, Wonders, is a comprehensive literacy program that incorporates a variety of genres and subjects, including social studies and science themes. The program is rich in literature, vocabulary, skills, and strategies and provides engaging reading and writing opportunities. The Wonders program aligns with the Common Core State Standards.

In Focus Math  is our math program. It is based on the Singapore Math model and supports the goals of the Common Core State Standards. The program includes integrated technology, manipulatives, and differentiated instruction.

During the week, students travel to Computers, Library, Art, Music, Keyboarding, French, Wellness, and Physical Education classes.

Third graders love to work together, are helpful, kind, and like to cheer on classmates.  They also enjoy meeting once a month with their HCS buddies.  Third graders have special buddies in Kindergarten and in Mrs. Kelley’s eighth grade advisory.   Students continue to build positive learning relationships throughout the year by knowing what is expected:

1. Be a friend to everyone. 2. Learn and allow others to learn. 3. Be safe.

We continue to use the same Language Arts program called “Wonders” and the same mathematics program called “Math in Focus” that students had in grades K-2.  These programs meet the common core standards.   In social studies we learn about our town, study our town history, Holderness and Squam Lake geography, government and voting, and our local economy.  In science we learn all about trees, weather, ecosystems, and simple machines.  Many of our field trips and homework assignments are based on science, nature, and exploring outside.

Reading Interventionist – Mrs. Joan Coursey

I am Joan Coursey. I am a Reading Interventionist for grades K-2. I work with many of the children as they learn to read and write. Together with classroom teachers, the RTI coordinators (Response to Intervention), and other academic specialists, we assess students’ reading skills and offer a variety of programs in and out of the classroom. Some children are seen on a short term basis for help with a specific skill such as letter id, letter sounds, sight words or fluency. Other children may be chosen for a long term intervention that provides daily individual instruction. I use components of several research based reading programs, (Reading Recovery, Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Fountas and Pinell LLI, etc) to provide children with comprehensive instruction at their individual level. We want all children to have the necessary skills to be life-long readers and learners.
