Art – Mrs. Jadi Mercer

Art is a gift to be enjoyed by everyone.

In the art room we will grow not only as artists, but as innovators, hard workers, and positive influential members of our school community. Art encourages students to discover new tools to communicate and flourish their ingenious ideas and build upon existing lessons.

Students will have the opportunity to create in 2-D and 3-D throughout the year. They will make new discoveries by building with clay, exploring drawing and painting processes (oil pastels, pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolor, acrylic, tempera, fibers, etc.), designing digitally, and working together.

By the time students move on to high school they will be familiar with an array of art materials, general art history, presentation skills, color theory, and have confidence in themselves as an artist!

Computer Education – Grades 4-8 – Mr. Marc Rondeau

Grades 4-8 will meet once per week for the entire year. The curriculum will begin by reviewing necessary skills such as saving files, keyboarding, word-processing, and desktop navigation & organization. Once these skills are reinforced, students will use those skills to complete projects based primarily on specific material they are learning in their other classes. Projects will consist of creating newsletters, pamphlets, brochures, letters, poems, power point presentations, creating spreadsheets and much more.

The main goal of computer class is to provide students with the computer technology skills necessary so they can safely and effectively use technology in their classes and in their life. Please feel free to contact me with questions or comments regarding computer education at HCS.

French – Ms. Catherine Wilson

Studies have shown that foreign language study benefits all students. The study of another language leads to higher scores on standardized tests (reading, math, SAT), greater cognitive development in the areas of mental flexibility, creativity, divergent thinking and higher-order thinking skills, a broader English vocabulary, and a better understanding of one’s own language and culture.

Students in 1st through 7th grade go to French class only once a week. Because many new students have never had French before, we spend a lot of time reintroducing and reinforcing concepts throughout the year.

Students learn to introduce themselves (je m’appelle ….), how to greet people, how to count, and how to express simple feelings.

In middle school , students learn grammar and vocabulary to have little conversations amongst themselves. They use vocabulary pertaining to everyday activities – school, home, and leisure activities.

The French 1 class follows the Plymouth High School French curriculum.

Physical Education – Mr. Bob Miller

Physical Education at HCS is based on a developmental approach, providing a logical progression in skill and knowledge development from kindergarten to the eighth grade.

In grades K – 4 the focus is on gross motor skills and concepts. Balance, coordination, body parts and spatial awareness, are explored through various activities such as tumbling, jump ropes, parachute activities, and use of other equipment and activities. The children are exploring what their bodies are capable of doing.

In grades 5 – 8 the students are encouraged to use and enjoy the skills and knowledge they have developed through the use of group and individual activities.

Lifelong activities such as racquet sports and golf that lead to an active lifestyle are introduced. Physical Education is taught by a certified teacher and provides students with a basic understanding of their bodies and insight into their own growth. Children are allowed to participate and succeed at their own level.
