The K-2 classroom incorporates Responsive Classroom to teach students responsibility and respect. Our school wide social skill training program Take Charge is a Glasser Model. Literacy is a key component of the K-2 class. Each morning 120 minutes are devoted to literacy instruction. Guided Reading, Daily 5, Reading Street Basal (grade 2) Interactive Writing, Lucy Calkins Units of Study, Words Their Way, and Handwriting Without Tears are the programs taught. In this multi-age classroom, assessments based instruction is implemented to ensure that students are taught at their academic level.
University of Chicago Everyday Math is taught every afternoon for 90 minutes. Each grade level has an instructional group then students rotate to math centers. Everyday Math uses games and explorations that teach children multiple strategies to solve problems. Technology is incorporated throughout the day using desk top computers and iPads.
Social Studies and Science are project based and follow a three year rotation cycle. We are fortunate to have a partnership with Squam Lakes Natural Science Center to enrich our science curriculum!
